Every human on this earth is unique, with differences in physical appearance, thoughts, life paths, dreams, abilities, and so much more. Among these countless differences lie individual talents that make each of us unique. But here's the thing—excellence isn't some magical gift that falls from the sky for free!
Being excellent doesn't mean you have to be world-famous, own immense wealth, or hold a high position. Trust me, If those are your goals, you'll miss out on life's true meaning. Excellence is about building personal integrity and growing your mind through continuous learning—whether at school or from everyday experiences—that aligns with your passion and leads you to thrive. Fame is just a bonus. Your main goal should be to become intelligent, impactful, and valuable to your community and nation. Talent alone isn't enough; you need a creative mindset, broad perspectives, and a humble character willing to grow through life's challenges. Don't lose heart if you've never topped the class or earned high grades. Numbers and letters on a report card are temporary, not absolute. Even an IQ test doesn't determine your future success. The key to excellence isn't other people or your grades—it's you. As long as you're a creative and critical thinker, you're a problem solver!
Everyone wants to be excellent. The question is: how? The foundation of excellence is awareness of your talent. Whatever your passion is—whether in social sciences, arts, languages, or something else—it can lead you to greatness. As long as you're determined, willing to work hard, hold on to your principles, and never give up, you'll get there. Sometimes, people's criticism of your life choices can knock you down. Worse, it might push you to abandon your true passion. But ask yourself: will those people take responsibility for your life? Big no!
Yes, challenges are inevitable when pursuing your talent and future. You may be underestimated for not excelling in school rankings or for following a path society doesn't value. You may feel hurt, even doubt your worth, or envy others for their achievements in more conventional fields. You might even think, "Why was I born like this?" But remember, you're only a loser if you stay stuck in those thoughts! You're a winner when you wipe away your tears, lift your head, stand tall, and move forward. People can try to predict your life, but only God is the ultimate designer of your destiny. So, are you still choosing sadness, or are you ready to embrace your passion?
Take inspiration from Albert Einstein and Thomas Edison—two world-class individuals who excelled in their fields. Did they aim to be famous legends? No. Decades of their lives were spent learning and experimenting, without thought of fame. Look at Ken Soetanto, an Indonesian who earned four doctoral degrees in Japan. Before achieving this, he faced many struggles. Born into a humble family, he experienced the closure of his Chinese-heritage high school during a political era, losing his brother's electronics store to a fire, and financial difficulties. At 23, he refused to believe it was too late to learn. With limited funds, he went to Japan and persevered through hardship as a student, ultimately fulfilling his dream of spreading knowledge as a scientist. Many other world-class figures prove that excellence begins with a desire to be a blessing, not to gain fame. Excellence knows no boundaries—whether age, location, ethnicity, religion, or passion. Challenges may be walls, but they're not indestructible if you want to break them down.
Being excellent is a choice—your choice. If you're diligent and persistent, and most importantly believe God is with you, nothing can stop you from achieving your dreams. So, keep it up, buddies!
Note:
I originally wrote this piece before being posted on this blog around 2020 (maybe 2–3 years earlier). Today (20/11/24), I updated it into English to reach a global audience. Initially, I just casually edited it to share my writing with a broader audience. However, as someone who has felt hopeless and unable to achieve my dreams over the past few years, I was deeply reminded and encouraged by the powerful words I had written. I could hardly believe that I was the one who wrote this!
